The Brisbane Lions drafted Mayes during the 2012 NAB AFL Draft, taking the highly promising forward as their first round selection. Since his time as a Lion, Mayes has developed from a crafty half-forward to a key midfielder.
As a junior, Mayes was an under-age representative of South Australia’s u18 side in 2011. In the following year, during his second consecutive year for the SA state side, Mayes was selected in the honourable All-Australian team in his 2012 season. During this time, Mayes was recognised for his ability as a lead-up forward however showed prospects of fulfilling the role of a midfielder in years to come. Mayes first year at Brisbane was highly impressive. After debuting in round 3, Mayes finished the year with 18 senior games whilst collecting a Rising Star nomination in his 25-disposal appearance against Fremantle in round 12. Mayes’ stellar debut season was recognised by the Lions as he was awarded the 2013 Rookie of the Year award whilst finishing top 10 in the club’s best and fairest count. Since being drafted by the Lions, Mayes has played 95 senior games for the club.
In his 2017 season, Mayes played primarily through the midfield, collecting an average of 21 disposals. Mayes will look towards the 2018 season where he hopes to further consolidate his game as an elite midfielder.
