The Brisbane Lions drafted Mayes during the 2012 NAB AFL Draft, taking the highly promising forward as their first round selection. Since his time as a Lion, Mayes has developed from a crafty half-forward to a key midfielder.
Mayes first year at Brisbane was highly impressive. After debuting in round 3, Mayes finished the year with 18 senior games whilst collecting a Rising Star nomination in his 25-disposal appearance against Fremantle in round 12. Mayes’ stellar debut season was recognised by the Lions as he was awarded the 2013 Rookie of the Year award whilst finishing top 10 in the club’s best and fairest count. Since being drafted by the Lions, Mayes has played 95 senior games for the club.
Following the 2018 season Mayes was traded back to his home state to play with Port Adelaide. Mayes will look to become a key part of the Port midfield group moving forward.
