Varun Chopra

Essex Batsman

Date of Birth

Essex, Warwickshire, England Lions, England U19

Right hand bat

An opener of considerable talent, Varun Chopra is a product of the Essex conveyor belt of batsmen. He impressed as captain of England Under-19s, whom he led to a comprehensive series whitewash of Sri Lanka in 2005 and, under Graham Gooch’s tutelage, scored his debut Essex century in his debut year.

A move to Warwickshire in 2010 proved a huge success. 2011 saw him become the first Warwickshire batsman to score double hundreds in back to back county matches.

This was surpassed in 2012 in becoming Warwickshire’s leading run scorer in each format of the game – a year in which the County Championship title returned to Edgbaston.

Captaining the side for long periods in 2013, his eye catching form continued with 1069 first class and 461 List A runs. In 2014, again as stand in captain, he led the Bears to a T20 title and Lords Final in the Royal London Trophy as well as  second place in the County Championship. This led to him being appointed full time club Captain in advance of the 2015 season.

Firmly on the national selectors’ radar, Varun was a member of the England Performance squads in 2012 and 2013 and toured Australia with the England Lions in 2013 and Sri Lanka in 2014.

Towards the end of the 2016 season, Varun returned to Essex on a long term contract.

Varun is available for all types of media work, ambassadorial roles and appearances.
