A mature age draftee hailing from Norwood in the SANFL, the strong defender joined Hawthorn as pick 66 in the 2010 National Draft. As a 23 year old Puopolo made his AFL debut in Round 7 of 2011, finishing the year with 20 games including 3 finals.
He carried this form into 2012, adding 21 games on the way to a losing Grand Final, but the Hawks made amends and Puopolo was part of their three successive Premierships from 2013-2015. Renowned for his intensity around the ball and his defensive pressure as a forward, Puopolo creates headaches for opposition defenders
While Hawthorn haven’t had the same finals success in more recent years, Puopolo has personally maintained his form and durability throughout his career. He has played over 20 games every season, the only exception being 2017 where he played 15. Not only does he set up fellow forwards and keep the ball in Hawthorn’s possession, he can also hit the scoreboard with over 170 goals to his name.
Despite a later start to his AFL career, Puopolo will now look to his next footy milestone, his 200th game.
