A top junior talent who is finally over a series of injuries that have hampered his career so far, Nakia Cockatoo is a club favourite who still has plenty left to give at the Geelong Football Club.
Growing up in Darwin, Nakia ockatoo played junior football for Southern Districts before representing the NT Thunder in the NEAFL. His raw ability and ability to play around the ground caught Geelong’s eye as he was selected with Pick 10 in the 2014 National Draft.
Debuting in Round 1 of 2015, the start of Cockatoo’s AFL career was promising as he showed his speed, silky skills and versatility, finishing the year with 11 games.
The following two years saw Cockatoo play a further 21 games, before he was struck down in 2018 with knee injuries. His return was setback further with soft-tissue injuries, forcing him to spend almost two years on the side-lines.
In 2020 Cockatoo was able to play his first practice match in a year, much to the excitement of his teammates.
He was able to show glimpses of excitement, before he left the Queensland hub early to be with his partner for the birth of their first child.
Cockatoo’s first child, daughter Lenah, was born at the end of 2020.
Ahead of the 2021 season, Cockatoo moved from Geelong to the Brisbane Lions to rejuvenate his career. Cockatoo made his debut for the Lions in Round 19, 2021, marking his first AFL game since the 2018 season.
