Darcy Byrne-Jones is a no-fuss footballer who has become one of the best defenders in the game, his approach to the game earning him All-Australian selection and fans across the competition.

Bio

Growing up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Byrne-Jones played his junior football for Camberwell Football Club and his school side at Scotch College. Overlooked for elite junior programs, it wasn’t until his Year 11 season with his school side where people began to take notice of Byrne-Jones, his attack and determination setting him apart from his teammates. It was that determination to improve which saw him elevated to the Oakleigh Chargers Under 18 side and represent Vic Metro in the 2013 National Championships. Performing well at the Draft Combine, Byrne-Jones bolted into draft contention, the competitor taken by Port Adelaide with Pick 53 in the 2013 National Draft.

Byrne-Jones had to bide his time in Port Adelaide’s reserves side for two years, playing in the SANFL competition predominantly across half-back. He credits these two years as he gained crucial experience and confidence playing against men. His chance at the AFL came in Round 3, 2016 and he took it with both hands, playing every game for the rest of the season and earning a Rising Star nomination along the way. Byrne-Jones established himself in the Port Adelaide defence, where his competitive approach and doing what it takes to get the job done quickly made him a fan favourite. Celebrating his 100th game in 2020, Byrne-Jones has only missed one game since his debut. Consistent, reliable and tough, the three keys to Byrne-Jones game and his approach to football have begun to catch the eye of fans around the league. His unique hairstyle makes him easy to spot on the field whether he is bouncing off the ground after a crashing contest, or emerging from a pack to set up a forward entry. Runner-Up in the Port Adelaide Best and Fairest for 2019, Byrne-Jones took his game to another level in 2020 and went one better to finish top, while also gaining his first All-Australian selection

While he displays his on-field smarts week after week, off-field Byrne-Jones is currently undertaking a Business course through University.
