TLA netballers win Commonwealth gold

The Australian Diamonds have stunned powerhouse Jamaica to claim gold in the Commonwealth Games with a 55-51 win in Birmingham.

TLA netballers, Liz Watson (Captain), Sunday Aryang, Jo Weston and Jamie-Lee Price were all part of the winning series.

The Diamonds five-match series included wins over Barbados (95-18), Scotland (83-30), South Africa (74-49), Wales (79-33) and a loss against Jamaica (55-57). They booked themselves a redemption match against Jamaica after defeating England (60-51) in the semi-final.

After scores being level at half time (29 all) Liz Watson led from the front in a pivotal third quarter performance to put the Diamonds ahead by six goals heading into the final quarter. Although Jamaica persisted throughout the fourth the margin would prove to be too much, and the Diamonds would hold.

This staggering effort by the Diamonds would come of Australia’s 1000th gold in Commonwealth Games History.

The TLA netballers will continue to represent the green and gold in the Constellation Cup four-game series against New Zealand.
