Much-loved veteran of the Melbourne Football Club, TLA’s Nathan Jones celebrated his 300th milestone match in style, helping his side deliver a big win over Richmond in the marquee ANZAC Day Eve match.
As only the second-ever Demon to reach the magical 300-game mark, plenty of eyes were on the Melbourne hard-nut, who was chaired off the ground following his side’s impressive 34-point victory over last year’s premiers.
The win also solidifies Melbourne’s place on top of the AFL ladder, marking the first time the Dees have gone 6-0 since 1965.
Jones, who has taken on a revised role in the twilight of his career, was cheered for each of his 16 disposals and continues to play with the tough and tenacious approach that is embodying Melbourne’s style this season.
“I’ve probably been dreaming of that (a premiership) my whole career really,” Jones told reporters prior to the match.
“A lot of people say ‘why did you stick around through difficult times?’
“That dream was the thing that probably kept me alive (in the AFL) really – it kept driving me towards wanting to stick around.”
Jones’ unwavering commitment to the club is paying off in 2021, with the Demons producing scintillating football – with his trademark contested game as strong as ever.
“When I wanted to play on last year I had a good chat to (Simon Goodwin) and it wasn’t about reaching this milestone,” Jones said.
“It was more so about being able to play in a successful team and contribute as much as I could on the field and off-field to get the group into a position that we find ourselves in now.
A career highlight could yet await the 33-year-old in what has been a perfect start to 2021.
