Unseeded Sloane Stephens advances to Rogers Cup quarterfinals

Via Excelle Sports

Sloane Stephens, who recently returned to tennis after a year-long absence from a foot injury, has knocked off No. 3 seed Angelique Kerber at the Rogers Cup. The 24-year-old Stephens returned to tennis at last month’s Wimbledon and pulled off the huge upset Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals in Toronto.

Pre-injury, Stephens had been ranked as high as 11th in the world, but the American entered the Rogers Cup unseeded as expectations were tempered given the long time away from the game. After beating No. 14 seed Petra Kvitova in the last round, she dominated Kerber 6-2, 6-2 in a match that lasted less than an hour.

Next up for Stephens will be Lucie Safarova.
