One of the heart and souls of the Carlton Football Club, Sam Docherty was originally drafted to the Brisbane Lions in the 2011 National Draft. After two seasons ad 13 games, the defender moved back to Victoria where he slotted straight into the Carlton backline.
Docherty excelled both on and off the field with his leadership, direction, and sheer ability. He has won club a Best and Fairest, Best Club Person, and gained All-Australian selection in 2017, however consecutive ACL injuries in 2018 and 2019 saw him sit on the sidelines for two seasons. He used this time to mentor younger players in the team and sit on the bench on game days getting hands on experience of the coaching side of the game.
When he made his return to the field in 2020, Docherty was back to his best in no time, commandeering the Blues defence and navigating Co-Captaincy with Patrick Cripps. In Round 8 of the 2020 season Docherty celebrated his 100th AFL game.
