Hailing from SANFL club Norwood, Ryan was taken with Hawthorn’s first selection, pick 16, at the 2008 NAB AFL Draft. Ryan is a versatile tall who can impose the game at both the defensive and attacking ends of the ground.
He made his debut in Round 1, 2009 in the Grand Final rematch against Geelong. A key position defender, Ryan enjoyed a promising start to his AFL career, with a really consistent season in 2012 where he was a member of the Hawks Grand Final line up. Unfortunately Shoenmakers missed the majority of season 2013 with a knee injury, but after a reconstruction he looked set for a big 2014. Coming back from his knee reconstruction meant he couldn’t cement a regular spot in the Hawks line up missing out on the Grand Final win over Sydney. He was finally rewarded with his persistence and played an import will be an important role up forward in the 2015 premiership win.
Through a combination of sustained injury and widespread competition for positions, Ryan managed a modest 17 games over the 2016/2017 seasons. Ryan has committed for a 10th season at the club, meaning he will remain a Hawk until the end of the 2018 season. Hoping to stay clear from injury and return to his best form, Ryan will hope to rejoin the senior side in the 2018 season.
