St.Kilda Football Club recruited Ray Connellan ahead of the 2017 season as a Category B International Rookie. Originating from Ireland, the former-Gaelic player from Westmeath has great agility for his size. Standing at 188cm, Ray has been able to combine his speed with his aerial presence and has become a very versatile key position player.
Connellan was recruited due to his ability shown in the Gaelic league as well as his ability shown in the 2015 International Rules Series. The 23-year-old has great pace, shown through his AFL Combine testing; running a 2.78 seconds in his 20-metre-sprint. This is only 0.03 seconds off the Combine record.
Since joining the Saints, Connellan has played solely through the club’s VFL affiliate, the Sandringham Football Club. Connellan started as defender, using his size and pace to outrun and play his opponents. However, towards the season’s end, Connellan was moved down to the forward line. He relished the opportunity and made large inroads to his game. Connellan made his senior debut for the club during the inaugural AFLX competition in early 2018. The large swingman was composed and showed great promise. He will look to continue his development throughout the 2018 season.
