Nick Shipley became the first graduate of the Giants Academy from Western Sydney to join the club when he was selected with pick 64 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft, he is only the third AFL player drafted from Sydney’s west in 30 years. Shipley is a tall, well-built midfielder who works hard through the middle, winning the ball with ease and marking well overhead. Shipley excels at stoppages, has great vision and clean hands making him a fierce opponent to beat. Shipley finished the year well with a 19-possession performance in the All-Stars match on grand final day at the MCG, followed by an even more impressive effort at the Draft Combine at Etihad Stadium.
He is a relative newcomer to Australian Rules but has taken it all in his stride . He is deceptively quick, uses his frame to his advantage and lays bone-crunching tackles. Shipley clocked 2.97 seconds for the 20-metre sprint putting him in the top 10 per cent of all players, and then backed it up with equally impressive efforts in the endurance tests finishing in the top 12 per cent in the 2km time trial and the yoyo test. He has become a strong force on the inside for the Giants reserves and impressed at the National Under 18 Championships for the Allies. In that carnival he averaged 16.3 disposals, 2.3 marks and 4.3 tackles, while running at an impressive 50 per cent contested possession rate.
Shipley made his AFL debut in Round 6 of the 2018 season where he collected 7 disposals and 3 tackles. With further experience and matches, Shipley will only grow his influence and presence among the Giants and the AFL.
