A midfielder who is efficient by hand and generally uses it well on either foot, O’Kearney made his way to the Saints via the 2015 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
A standout junior who represented Vic Metro at Under 16 level in 2013, and as an Under 18 in 2014 and 2015, O’Kearney’s journey to the AFL included a place in the AFL Academy at Level 1 and Level 2.
Calder’s Best and Fairest in 2014 and named to the 2015 NAB AFL Under 18 All Australian team, O’Kearney’s relentless ball winning in the midfield was lauded every time he took the field.
Good overhead for his size, the student of the game joined a St Kilda list that has stockpiled talent in the last few Drafts and provided a pathway for a number of players to launch from the Rookie List to long-term AFL careers. O’Kearney began his journey with some excellent performances for the Saints’ VFL affiliate Sandringham in 2016, averaging 20-plus possessions per game and kicking three goals on two occasions.
