Matt Rowell was drafted to the Gold Coast Suns as the Number 1 Draft Pick in the 2019 AFL National Draft. The dynamic inside midfielder dominated Under 18 competitions across 2019, averaging 31.6 disposals throughout the year.
Rowell made an immediate impact at the Suns, slotting into the professional requirements with ease and making his debut in Round 1 of 2020. After several months off due to the Covid enforced delay to the season, Rowell came out firing in Round 2 with a clear Best on Ground performance, finishing with 26 disposals, 2 goals and the Rising Star nomination in just his second game at AFL level.
A serious shoulder injury in Round 5 saw Rowell’s inaugural season end prematurely, however he has maintained his involvement on match days working with the coaching staff as an opposition analysist.
A student of the game, Rowell enjoys learning about all aspects of professional football, while away from football he is a keen gardener.
