Scott McLaughlin wins Bathurst 1000
TLA Supercars driver Scott McLaughlin has raced away to a maiden Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 victory in a dramatic-filled day on Mount Panorama.
The six-and-a-half-hour race came down to a thrilling final-lap sprint, with McLaughlin holding off Holden star Shane van Gisbergen by 0.68 of a second.
Racing with low fuel, McLaughlin steered his Ford Mustang to the chequered flag after the eighth and final safety car left the track with just one of the 161 laps remaining, setting up a nail-biting finish and delivering McLaughlin’s second ‘Enduro’ race victory since winning Race #2 at the 2017 Gold Coast 600.
“I can’t believe I won the bloody Bathurst 1000,” said an emotional McLaughlin, who had Frenchman Alex Premat as his co-driver.
“I have dreamt about this. I put so much pressure on myself to make this a good one but I am so proud of this team.”
It marked the first Bathurst win by DJR Team Penske since 1994. The win extended McLaughlin’s series lead over nearest rival van Gisbergen to 622 points.
