Leon Cameron extends contract at GWS Giants
Greater Western Sydney GIANTS coach Leon Cameron has signed a contract extension that will see him lead the club until at least the end of 2018.
The two year contract extension comes on the eve of Cameron’s third season as head coach of the GIANTS and on the same day the club unveiled a new multi-million dollar, multi-year co-major partnership with leading international tyre brand Toyo Tires.
Cameron, 43, originally signed with the GIANTS for the 2013 season as senior assistant coach for one year under Kevin Sheedy before stepping into the role as Head Coach in 2014.
He led the GIANTS to six wins in his first season and 11 victories in 2015.
GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews said the club was delighted to have re-signed Cameron for a further two seasons.
“Leon Cameron has done a fantastic job leading our young team in his first two seasons and we’re very confident he’s the right person to continue taking this group forward,” said Mr Matthews.
“He’s had a significant impact on this club in a relatively short space of time.
“Our win-loss record has improved dramatically and he’s been pivotal in seeing our young stars including Jeremy Cameron, Dylan Shiel, Devon Smith, Stephen Coniglio and Phil Davis re-commit to the club.
“Leon wholeheartedly embraced the GIANTS from the minute he arrived in Sydney and is an outstanding ambassador for the club, as well as an outstanding coach.
“It’s a significant day for the GIANTS as we secure two major pillars of the club’s future; our long term coaching outlook and our commercial footing via the new co-major partnership with an international company in Toyo Tires.”
Cameron said he’s looking forward to being an integral part of what promises to be a bright future for the GIANTS.
“It was a really easy decision to re-sign. It gives myself, our coaching staff and the playing group a great opportunity to keep progressing and hopefully reach the ultimate goal of a premiership,” said Cameron.
“Having lived in Sydney for three years, this city and this club feels like home to me and my family, and I want to be part of this club that proudly represents Western Sydney and Canberra on the national stage.
“Like the 10 players who re-signed last year, I’ve committed to this club because we have a fantastic culture at the GIANTS and are building something special.
“I’m really looking forward to 2016 – we want to play finals footy, but we’ve got to earn the right to do that and hopefully our pre-season allows us to stand up to the 22 weeks and beyond that are coming our way this year.”
