ICC returns to Melbourne in 2016
TLA Worldwide and TEG Live yesterday officially confirmed the 2016 International Champions Cup Australia, presented by Audi would be returning to Melbourne in July, featuring defending A-League Champions, Melbourne Victory, and European giants Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur.
With a fourth team set to be announced in February, the tournament returns following it’s overwhelming debut success earlier this year that saw 221,000 fans flock to the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Italy’s most successful club with 33 Serie A championships in the cabinet, Juventus are a proven giant of the European football landscape, while Tottenham have been a model of consistency in top flight football collecting silverware in every decade since their inaugural league title in 1951.
The inclusion of Melbourne Victory in this year’s event comes as a result of fan feedback to feature a local team in the competition’s format and provides football fans the opportunity to witness international stars in the flesh alongside local heroes.
Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, The Hon. John Eren MP, said the inclusion of Melbourne Victory was a major win for Australian football fans.
“This is a great opportunity to watch our A-League champions take on the might of European club football. Melbourne Victory has already conquered the local competition – now it’s time for the biggest challengers in the world,” Minister Eren said.
“The International Champions Cup is a flagship date on our great calendar of major events, bringing business and visitors to Victoria. The tournament is a hit with visitors from right around Australia and the world – the figures prove it.”
TLA Worldwide Chairman, Bart Campbell, said the tournament would continue to add to Melbourne’s impressive portfolio of major sporting events.
“In its first showing, the tournament proved itself to be a must-attend event for fans, and an attractive option for overseas teams to visit,” Campbell said.
“Backing from the government bolsters our ability to host a world-class sporting spectacle and we’re again looking to set a new precedent in 2016.”
Victory will host Juventus first up on Saturday, July 23, ahead of Juventus and Tottenham Tuesday, July 26. Tottenham will then host the fourth team on Friday, July 29 to round out the tournament.
“Yet again, some of the world’s best footballers will be on show for the Australian public with a few more surprise packets on the way,” said Jones.
“Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur each have significant global attraction, so we’re anticipating fans from Melbourne, interstate and abroad will flock to the MCG to be part of the action.”
