Houston Astro Carlos Correa to be presented Mayor’s Literacy Leadership Award

It’s not a home run, a diving stop or a good throw that’s going to make the crowd cheer for Carlos Correa on June 1. The Houston Astros shortstop will be presented with the Mayor’s Literacy Leadership Award by Mayor Sylvester Turner and the Houston Center for Literacy.

Correa will be honored at the annual Mayor’s Literacy Leadership Award Breakfast for the work he’s done in the Houston community. The Puerto Rico native has worked with the Salvation Army, Houston Children’s Charity and the Gogui Foundation, a Puerto Rican charity that helps sick children who are economically disadvantaged.

“One always has to do something to help others, or just contribute in a small way,” Correa said in a news release. “I’m at a place in my life and career where I can be involved in charities that are making a difference.”

The Houston Center for Literacy coordinates and advocates for adult literacy and workforce skills development efforts in Houston. The center’s ultimate goal is to help end the cycle of intergenerational functional illiteracy in Houston, and narrow the education gap to foster a more literate, prepared community.

“Houston Center for Literacy envisions every individual obtaining the skills necessary to prosper,” Mayor Turner said in a news release. “Not only has Carlos Correa shown incredible skill on the baseball field, but also in the Houston community, and we are pleased to honor him at the Literacy Leadership Awards Breakfast.”

The Mayor’s Literacy Leadership Awards Breakfast is 7:30 a.m. June 1 at River Oaks Country Club. Tickets to attend can be purchased here.
