Fast5s to complete netball slam: Pettitt
Experienced shooter Susan Pettitt will lead Australia on its mission to complete netball’s ‘grand slam’ when they vie to become holders of all four international tournaments at the Fast5sNetball World Series in Melbourne on October 29-30.
The Diamonds’ trophy cabinet houses the recent Quad Series, Netball World Cup and is all but guaranteed to retain the Constellation Cup yet it has never featured the Fast5s silverware.
Australia (2-1) will keep the trans-Tasman trophy on Thursday night in New Zealand, if not with a desired win in the fourth and final Test, but with an insurmountable 20+ goal differential.
“Fast5s is the one world series that has eluded us,” Pettitt said of the tournament which Australia has competed at six times to be runner up in 2013, where she was co-captain and 2014, which she sat out for her wedding.
“It’s not just the Kiwis to beat, Malawi and South Africa are also really strong in this format of the game. It’s going to be an interesting competition. We’ll definitely be out there to win and we’re going to put some different tactics out there too.”
Pettitt is set to join the new AFL-backed Giants netball franchise in 2017 and she tipped the short form of the game to help boost her goal haul next season.
“I have been practising (long bombs), probably more the two-pointers than the threes because I’m probably more comfortable in that range,” Pettitt said.
“It’s going to help me with my normal netball and my confidence to turn and shoot those long shots.”
Australia will play host to the world’s top netballing nations; New Zealand, England, Jamaica, Malawi and South Africa for the first time in Melbourne and holds the tournament rights until 2018.
The tournament will be broadcast on GEM during prime time as the first series under the breakthrough television deal with the Nine Network which saw minimum player payments double.
