Wayne Gretzky Ice Hockey Classic

Two of the world's greatest sporting rivals face off in Australia

Back by popular demand, Ice Hockey Classic returned to Australian shores for a five-leg tour in June 2016 – and this time Wayne Gretzky, the world’s greatest ever ice hockey player, hosted the event in Sydney!

In a series contested between two of the great sporting rivals, teams representing the USA and Canada toured Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and, for the first time, Adelaide.

The endorsement of Wayne Gretzky ensured an even stronger calibre of players for the event, and ‘The Great One’ himself attended the Sydney match at Qudos Bank Arena on Saturday 25 June, even lacing up the skates for a Legends game to raise the curtain for the main event.

Ice Hockey Classic was hugely successful in 2015 and included National Hockey League (NHL) stars Brent Burns (San Jose Sharks) and David Booth (Toronto Maple Leafs). This year, NHL All-Star MVP John Scott captained Team USA and was the first of many exciting player announcements, including former NHL star Brent Scrivens goal-tending for Canada. USA and Canada again reignited one of world sport’s most famous rivalries, all the while raising awareness and funds for the STOPCONCUSSIONS Foundation.
