In July 2016, defending A-League champions, Melbourne Victory, hosted powerhouse European football clubs, England’s Tottenham Hotspur and Italy’s Juventus Football Club plus Spain’s Atlético de Madrid.

Atlético de Madrid, one of the most successful clubs in Spanish football history, have won ten domestic La Liga titles, ten Copa del Rey trophies and two Europa League titles.

Following the overwhelming success of the tournament’s debut in July 2015 that saw 221,000 fans flock to the Melbourne Cricket Ground across the event week, the European football franchises descended on Melbourne this July for a series of three hotly-contested matches.

The event marked the second year that Australian football fans will witness some of the world’s best footballers from European competitions.

International football idols that made the journey to Australia included Erik Lamela and Paulo Dybala from Tottenham Hotspur, plus freshly re-signed Fernando Torres and Filipe Luis for Atlético de Madrid.
