Erin Phillips completes incredible season with Premiership, AFLW Best & Fairest

Erin Phillips Best & Fairest Award

Adelaide Crows AFLW superstar Erin Phillips has wrapped up an incredible 2019 season taking home an historic second NAB AFL Women’s Best & Fairest Award days after captaining her team to a premiership and being judged best afield in the Grand Final.

Proving without a doubt she is the most dominant player in the competition, Phillips polled 19 of a possible 21 votes to capture the league’s most prestigious award for the second time after also winning the award in the 2017 inaugural season.

Just two days prior, Phillips captained Adelaide as they ran out clear victors in the Grand Final, defeating Carlton by 45 points in front of an incredible 53,000 spectators. Despite suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee during the victory, Phillips still took home best-on-ground honours.

A former professional basketballer, Phillips’ Best & Fairest is just the latest accolade for the 33-year-old, who also has a 2008 Olympic silver, a 2006 World Championships gold and a 2014 World Championships bronze.

To add to that, Phillips also took home a second AFL Players’ Association MVP

“It’s obviously a really special award to win,” Phillips told The Today Show.

“To be able to be there with my teammates and celebrate – I missed Mad Monday because I was in an MRI machine – so to catch up with them was really special.”

As the youngest of Port Adelaide legend Greg Phillips’ three girls, throughout her life Phillips has heard many comments from people around her. But the success she has been able to find in both her chosen sports is a remarkable story of perseverance and dominance.

“When I was born, people felt sorry for him because he didn’t have a son to play footy someday, to carry the Phillips name,” Phillips said on the night.

“Dad, I know you’re watching and mum, I hope I’ve made you proud, and you can stick it up those people who said that to you.”
