Cornes to Play On
Port Adelaide Premiership player and four time best and fairest winner Kane Cornes will play for a record 15th season.
31-year-old Cornes, who was selected at pick 20 in the 2000 National draft, says he is honoured by the faith the club has put in him by offering him a new one year deal.
“It’s a pretty exciting time so I jumped at the chance to play on,” Cornes said.
“I feel really good, I’ve been really lucky with my body and I haven’t really missed a training session all year, I’ve played every game so I’m confident I’ve got at least another 12 months in me.
“It’s just a great group of guys and I’ve got some great mates here, even though many of them are 10 years younger than me.
“I love what they’ve been able to do…and I’ve never been more confident about where this club is going.”
Cornes, who has played a club record 285 games, says he is grateful to Senior Coach Ken Hinkley for his support.
“Kenny has been amazing…I can’t thank him enough, he’s probably extended my career by two or three years,” Cornes said.
Ken Hinkley said Cornes has continued to be a benchmark player at Port Adelaide and his leadership on and off the field is invaluable.
“Kane is a true professional and continues to be an outstanding player for this football club,” Hinkley said.
“His preparation is second to none and he sets the standards for our younger players to aspire to.
“Kane continues to get the big jobs done on the opposition’s best players and we’re rapt that he’s playing on.”
Cornes said Hinkley has also challenged him to keep his decade long winning streak in the demanding pre-season three kilometre time trial.
“There’s a couple of young ones nipping at my heels so I’ll do my best, I won’t give it up easily but we’ll see how we go,” Cornes said.
