Australian Opals Crush Belarus in Minsk Friendly
Australia’s women’s basketball team have tuned up for next month’s World Championship in ruthless fashion, crushing their Group C opponents Belarus 75-43 in a friendly in Minsk.
Powerhouse centre Liz Cambage was the star of the show, posting 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocks to steal the spotlight.
Veteran Belinda Snell added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists to continue her steady form.
Coach Brendan Joyce was impressed with the stingy defence of his well-drilled side.
“It was a fantastic performance to win against a strong European team – on their home court.
“You look at how many points they scored and what percentage they shot at, and you can only conclude that our defensive pressure and application is at a high level.
The Opals wasted no time asserting their dominance, racing to a 15-8 lead before closing out the first quarter ahead 22-12.
They never relented, and heading into the final quarter they had a 21-point advantage.
The two nations go head to head again on Tuesday, before Australia travels to Turkey for the World Championship.
